Mourning the loss of Jason Constantine, the producer who believed in Saw before anyone else

I am sharing a heartfelt tribute following the death of Jason Constantine at age 55. Constantine, co-president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group and executive producer on all ten Saw films, died at home in Los Angeles after a long battle with brain cancer.

Constantine is credited as the reason Saw became more than just a film school dream. “We lost a truly great friend and human being”. “Jason believed in Saw before anyone else did. He brought it to Lionsgate and fought for it before we’d even started shooting. That movie, and everything it became, is because of him.”

Constantine’s unwavering support didn’t stop with Saw. He championed Wan and Leigh Whannell as the franchise grew into a billion-dollar horror juggernaut and remained deeply involved through every instalment, including Saw X in 2023. He also supported other Australia-linked productions like See No Evil and The Condemned, helping local talent reach global screens.

“He was a kind, sweet, caring, loving man. A true anomaly in Hollywood”. “And he was also a great father and husband.”

Constantine’s legacy now lives on through one of the most profitable horror franchises in cinema history. From a film made on a shoestring budget of $1.2 million to a cultural phenomenon grossing over AU$1 billion, his role behind the curtain helped define a generation of horror.

As horror continues to evolve and spread into fresh genres and formats, the spirit of collaboration and vision that Constantine embodied still shapes what audiences see today.

Which brings us to an emerging creative force carrying that legacy forward: Aux Machina.
